Beards are often used as a sign of a man’s virility, but not a few are reluctant to maintain them for unhygienic reasons. No half-hearted, there are some people who even mention that itchy beards can contain more germs than toilet rooms.

However, the fact is that there are some health problems that can befall a beard if not treated properly, causing itching on the beard. Some of the things below are the causes of itchy beards:

  • Pubic lice

  • Pubic lice are small insects that prefer to live in coarser human hair, such as pubic hair. However, sometimes pubic lice can also get hair on the face, such as beards and mustaches. Although rare, pubic lice can also be found on the eyebrows and eyelashes.

    Physical and sexual contact can be a medium for pubic lice transfer, for example when hugging or kissing. Lice that make itchy beards can also spread through personal objects, such as clothes, towels and blankets that are shared with other people.

  • Ringworm

  • If an itchy, scaly rash with a round or oval shape appears on the beard, it may be ringworm. Ringworm on the beard is also called tinea barbae. Ringworm edges are usually darker or reddish, while the center has a lighter color so that it is shaped like a ring. It’s just that not always ringworm on a beard has the same pattern.

    At a severe level, ringworm on the beard becomes inflamed, reddened, crusty, swollen, and accompanied by bumps such as blisters. If not treated immediately, ringworm on the beard can cause permanent scarring.

  • Seborrheic dermatitis

  • One cause of beard itching is a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. This condition makes the skin itch, peel, and appear dandruff on the hairy area, such as the scalp and beard. This skin disease tends to be more common in people with oily skin.

  • Folliculitis

  • Is a condition where inflammation of the hair follicles occurs. Itchy beard due to folliculitis can be caused by clogged pores and hair follicles in the beard causing bacterial, viral, to fungal infections. This condition can also be caused by clogging of hair in the follicles which injures the pores of the skin, and is referred to as pseudopholiculitis.

    The sign of inflammation of the beard hair follicle is the formation of lumps like pimples that are painful or itchy, reddish, and there is pus.

Since itchy beards can be a place for pubic lice and ringworm, people who maintain beards must ensure their cleanliness. In addition to keeping your beard clean, be sure to avoid behaviors that can cause the outbreaks of various diseases above.
