In general, the endocrine glands are responsible for almost all processes in the body that take place slowly, including cell growth, body growth, reproduction, and metabolism. While bodily processes that take place more quickly, such as breathing and body movements, are regulated by the nervous system.

In the endocrine system, glands and hormones are like a foundation. Hormones are chemical compounds whose job is to send information and orders from one cell to another cell. Each hormone is specifically designed to work specifically on certain cells. Therefore, many different hormones travel back and forth in the bloodstream.

Glands in the Endocrine System

Various types of glands in the endocrine system include:

  • Thyroid gland

  • The thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodotironin (T3) which are in charge of controlling the level of burning energy from food. In addition parafollicular cells in the thyroid gland produce the hormone calcitonin which plays a role in bone formation.

  • Parathyroid gland

  • This gland releases parathyroid hormone whose job is to regulate calcium levels in the blood. The task of this hormone is assisted by the hormone calcitonin produced by the thyroid.

  • Pituitary gland

  • The pituitary gland or the pituitary gland is the most important gland in the endocrine system. The pituitary gland produces hormones whose function is to regulate various other endocrine glands. These include the hormone prolactin which is very important for nursing mothers, and the luteinizing hormone that plays a role in regulating estrogen in women and testosterone in men.

  • Adrenal gland

  • The adrenal gland is divided into two parts. First, the cortex that produces corticosteroids. This hormone is responsible for regulating fluid balance and salt levels in the body. This hormone also affects metabolism, the immune system, the body’s response to stress, and sexual development and function. Second, the part of the medulla that produces the hormone epinephrine or adrenaline. When the body is stressed, epinephrine increases blood pressure and heart rate.

  • Pancreatic gland

  • Producing two important hormones, namely glucagon and the hormone insulin. These two hormones work together to maintain blood sugar levels and maintain energy stores in the body.

  • Reproductive glands

  • Reproductive glands in men (testes) are in the scrotum, while female reproductive glands (ovaries or ovaries) are in the pelvic cavity. The testes produce the hormone testosterone, while the ovaries produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The body consists of so many chemical elements and compounds. If there are disturbances that cause the condition of various compounds to become unbalanced, for example too little or too much, it can cause various health problems. Generally, doctors will treat problems with the endocrine system by controlling hormone production or replacing certain hormones with drugs.
